The maths

How the numbers work

How is UAE customs duty calculated?

For most goods, duty is 5% of the CIF value. CIF is the cost of the goods plus the insurance and freight to bring them to the UAE. If insurance is not stated, customs usually adds 1% of the goods value.

How is import VAT calculated?

Import VAT is 5% of the CIF value plus the customs duty. VAT registered businesses can usually declare it in their VAT return under the reverse charge mechanism instead of paying at the border.

Which goods have a different rate?

Tobacco carries 100% duty and alcohol 50%. Goods of GCC origin with a valid certificate of origin are usually exempt, as are some basic foods and medical items. Excise goods also pay excise tax.

What is not included in this estimate?

Clearance fees, port and terminal handling, delivery order charges, inspection costs, storage, demurrage, excise tax and permit fees. Our quote lists every one of these.
